The hard drive is easy to install but a little bit more difficult to setup. Before you remove the old hard drive make sure you back-up all your important files. If you have CD burner you can copy your files to a blank CD. You can't copy programs, however. You'll just have to reinstall them on your new hard drive. If you are running Windows 95 and windows 98, make a startup disk before you remove the old hard drive. To create the startup disk click on the start button then go to the control panel. Double click on add/ remove program icon. There will be a tab at the top that says "startup disk" click on it and follow the instructions.
Remember, like all other upgrades make sure you unplug
the power cord before you remove the side cover. After your remove
the cover, look for a thin silver case, something like the picture
on my basic page. That picture shows the inside of a hard drive but
the one you have will be enclosed in a case with a thin wide cable
and a power plug connected to it. There will be four screws holding
it in place. Unplug the power plug and the cable then remove the
four screws and slide the drive out. Then just reinstall the new
hard drive in the reverse order. Then plug the power cord back in.
So when you highlight the auto detect, press the enter key then the system will detect the new hard drive and display it. Then press y for yes and then press enter to accept. It will then detect any CD-ROM drives you may have. Press y for yes at all of them. When it's done, highlight the save, and exit setup and press enter. Press y for yes and the computer will restart.
Before you press the enter key you want to put the startup disk that you created in the 3.5 disk drive then press enter.
All hard drives have to be formatted before you can
install the operating system. When the computer restarts it will
boot to an A:\ prompt. At the A prompt type the word format the press
enter. It will then ask if you want to format the whole drive, press
y for yes. It will then quickly start the process of formatting.
